Men Connect
For New Mainers
About Men Connect for New Mainers:
In 2018, the US Department of Justice provided us with funding to develop programming to engage Greater Portland’s rapidly expanding community of immigrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking men in violence prevention. From there, our Men Connect for New Mainers program was born, a program that provides a supported and confidential space for immigrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking men to explore their unique experiences with masculinity and discuss tools for self-care, healthy relationships, and violence prevention.
Most recently, we have been providing this program in local hotels and shelters where many New Mainer families are temporarily living. For more information, please contact us.
Many thanks to our community partner Martin’s Point Health Care for creating this video about our Men Connect for New Mainers program, and to Unum and Elmina B. Sewall Foundation for their support.
Testimonials
“Since my husband started to join the Maine Boys to Men meetings, he changed his behavior. I realized that there is somebody in the shadow helping understand how a couple can engage in uncomfortable topics together, but doing so comfortably.” ~A participant’s partner
“I am lucky to be joining the MBTM in Portland. This helps me a lot to get integrated into a new culture and understand the prevention piece to avoid the bad attitude in terms of dealing with a partner. I think I am in a good space at a good time.” ~Francis, participant
